Aechmea blanchetiana is a large, sun-loving bromeliad famous for warm bronze-to-orange foliage and a tall golden flower spike, a true statement plant for big vivariums and paludariums. Aechmeas are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that hold water in a central vase, or cup. This species is one of the biggest and boldest, grown above all for the way its leaves glow amber in strong light.

Origin and form

Blanchetiana is native to the coastal forests and open ground of eastern Brazil, where it grows large in bright, sunny positions. Its broad leaves shift from green through bronze to vivid amber-orange as light increases, and mature plants send up a tall, branching golden inflorescence. This is a centrepiece plant, not a small-terrarium subject.

Care at a glance

• Light: the brighter the light, including gentle direct sun, the more intense the orange colour.
• Water: keep the central cup topped with clean water and let the mix dry slightly between waterings.
• Humidity: enjoys humidity but is tolerant and undemanding.
• Temperature: very well suited to India's warm conditions, roughly 16 to 32°C.
• Difficulty: easy, given enough space and light.

Styling and terrarium use

Best as a large feature plant in spacious vivariums, paludarium land zones, open terrariums or bright patios. Because it grows big and loves light, treat it as a centrepiece rather than a closed-jar plant. The leaf margins carry small spines, so handle with care and site it away from delicate animals. Grow it emersed, above the waterline; it is not an aquatic plant and must not be submerged.

Propagation

Each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on to grow more of these big, glowing plants.
