Aechmea 'Blue Rain' is a striking silvery-blue bromeliad that brings cool, architectural colour to terrariums, vivariums and paludariums. Aechmeas are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that hold water in a central vase, or cup, rather than feeding mainly through the roots. That makes them easy, forgiving tropical bromeliads that reward humidity, exactly what an enclosed planted setup provides.

Origin and form

Aechmeas come from the forests of Central and South America, growing on trees in bright, filtered light. 'Blue Rain' forms broad, arching leaves in a classic water-holding vase, washed with a cool silvery-blue. Bright, indirect light brings out the blue tones and keeps the rosette full and architectural.

Its silvery-blue leaves contrast beautifully with deep green ferns and mosses. Grow it emersed, above the waterline; it is not an aquatic plant and must never be fully submerged. Like most bromeliads it is non-toxic and pet-friendly around cats and dogs.

Propagation

Each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on to multiply your collection.
