Aechmea chantinii 'Black' is one of the most dramatic bromeliads you can grow, with bold, dark, near-black leaves crossed by silvery bands. Known as the amazonian zebra plant, it belongs to Aechmea, a genus of epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that hold water in a central vase, or cup, rather than feeding mainly through the roots. Keep the cup topped, give it bright light and warm, humid air, and it becomes a true statement plant for a vivarium or large terrarium.

Origin and form

Chantinii comes from the humid rainforests of the Amazon basin in South America, growing on trees in bright, filtered light. Its arching leaves are so dark they read as near-black, crossed by striking silver zebra banding, and bright, indirect light keeps that contrast at its strongest. It can throw a spectacular red-and-orange inflorescence when mature.

Propagation

Like all bromeliads, each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on to multiply your collection.
