What is Cryptanthus?
Cryptanthus (pronounced krip-TAN-thus, meaning “hidden flower”) is a genus of ~65 species in the Bromeliaceae family, native to Brazilian forest floors. Unlike other bromeliads, Cryptanthus grows terrestrially in soil, forming flat, star-shaped rosettes hugging the substrate. They love high humidity (60–95%), which makes them ideal for closed terrariums, tropical vivariums and paludariums.

Frequently asked questions
What makes Cryptanthus different from other bromeliads?
Cryptanthus grow terrestrially (in soil), not as epiphytes. They lack the central water-holding cup found in Neoregelia, Aechmea, Billbergia and Vriesea. Care behaves more like a small tropical foliage plant than a typical bromeliad.
Are Cryptanthus good for closed terrariums?
Yes — Cryptanthus is the #1 bromeliad genus for closed terrariums. They love the still, humid air and their small size and colourful patterns pop against green mosses.
Which Cryptanthus is best for beginners?
Cryptanthus ‘Pink Star’ — our cheapest bromeliad (₹390 for 3), forgiving, and grows well in terrariums and pots. A great entry point to the genus.
Do Cryptanthus produce pups?
Yes — pups appear on stolons at various distances from the mother, creating a spreading colony over time. See our propagation guide.
