What is Aechmea?

Aechmea (pronounced eek-mee-ah) is a genus of ~250 species in the Bromeliaceae family. Unlike Neoregelia, Aechmeas produce dramatic tall visible flower spikes that persist for 3–6 months. Foliage is often silver-scaled or boldly banded. Aechmeas are among the toughest bromeliads and handle lower humidity than most other genera — which makes them ideal for typical Indian homes.

  • Light: bright — handles the widest range of light of any bromeliad genus
  • Temperature: 15–30°C; tolerates brief drops
  • Humidity: 40–70% (more tolerant of dry air than other genera)
  • Feeding: 1/4-strength balanced fertilizer monthly, warm months only

Frequently asked questions

What makes Aechmea different from Neoregelia?

Aechmea produces a tall visible flower spike that lasts 3–6 months. Neoregelia’s flower is hidden inside the cup; the whole plant centre turns coloured instead. Aechmea rosettes are more upright/vase-shaped; Neoregelia rosettes spread wider.

Are Aechmea good for beginners?

Yes — Aechmea are among the toughest bromeliads. They tolerate lower humidity than most genera and forgive irregular watering. Aechmea ‘Blanchetiana’ or ‘Pink Torch’ are great first Aechmeas.

How long does an Aechmea flower spike last?

3–6 months for the coloured bract phase. The individual flowers within the bracts last 1–2 weeks each but open sequentially. Long visual display overall.

Do Aechmeas have spines?

Most species have small marginal spines along the leaf edges. Handle with care or use gardening gloves. Chantinii has particularly bold spines.
