Aechmea nudicaulis 'Flavomarginata' is a tough, characterful bromeliad with bright yellow-edged leaves and a vivid red-and-yellow flower spike. Aechmeas are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that hold water in a central vase, or cup. This species is one of the hardiest of all, clumping readily and shrugging off neglect, which makes it a rewarding, colourful pick for vivariums, paludariums and terrariums.

Origin and form

Aechmea nudicaulis grows widely across Central and South America, from Mexico to Brazil, on trees and rocks in bright, exposed positions. The 'Flavomarginata' form is marked by bold yellow leaf margins, and at flowering it throws a striking red-and-yellow spike. Brighter light keeps the yellow edges at their boldest.

Care at a glance

Like most bromeliads it is non-toxic and pet-friendly around cats and dogs.

Propagation

Each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base, and this species offsets generously. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on.
