Cryptanthus 'Ruby Red' (Cryptanthus bivittatus) is a small terrestrial bromeliad, an "earth star" whose flat, star-shaped rosette glows a deep, glowing ruby red. Cryptanthus are the ground-dwelling members of the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae), the tropical group that also includes the pineapple. Unlike the cup-forming tropical bromeliads, earth stars have no central water reservoir; they take water and nutrients through the substrate. Compact, colourful and genuinely low-maintenance, this is one of the best terrarium bromeliads for adding rich colour right at ground level.

Origin and form

Cryptanthus are native to the shaded, humid forest floors of Brazil, where they hug the ground in dappled light. 'Ruby Red' stays small and flat, spreading in a neat star that carpets the foreground. The red deepens in brighter light and softens toward green in shade, so light is the key to keeping that ruby tone.
