Neoregelia 'Laelia' is a large, elegant bromeliad with a broad, gracefully coloured rosette, a refined feature plant for big planted displays. Neoregelias are among the most popular bromeliads for vivariums and terrariums, grown for the colour held in their leaves rather than for their flowers; each plant forms a spreading rosette with a watertight central cup.

Origin and form

The Neoregelia genus comes from the rainforests of eastern Brazil, where the plants grow as epiphytes on branches and among leaf litter. 'Laelia' spreads into a large, open rosette that warms in colour as light increases.

Care at a glance

Styling and terrarium use

As a large Neoregelia, 'Laelia' is best as a feature plant in a spacious vivarium, the land zone of a big paludarium, or a large display rather than a small terrarium. Give it room to spread as a refined centrepiece; its cup suits dart-frog vivariums. Grow it emersed, above the waterline; it is not an aquatic plant and must not be submerged. The foliage is non-toxic and pet-safe.

Propagation

Each rosette flowers once, then sends out pups around its base. Detach them when they reach about a third of the parent's size to grow on, so one plant slowly becomes many.
