Billbergia 'Arribella' – Live Bromeliad for Terrariums & Vivariums | India

💰 Price per plant: ₹2500

Billbergia 'Arribella' is a fast-growing tubular bromeliad whose upright, vase-shaped rosette and mottled colouring make it a natural vertical accent in vivariums, paludariums and terrariums. Billbergias are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) from the forests of Brazil, easily told apart by their tall, tubular rosettes. They hold water in that central tube, grow fast, clump freely and are among the hardiest bromeliads you can keep.

Origin and form

Billbergias are native to Brazil, where they grow on trees in bright, humid forest. 'Arribella' forms a slim, upright, tube-shaped rosette marked with soft mottling, and bright, indirect light deepens the colour and pattern. Like all Billbergias it can throw a spectacular, if short-lived, pendant flower.

Care at a glance

• Light: bright, indirect light deepens the colour and markings.
• Water: keep the central tube topped with clean, fresh water and mist the leaves; keep the mix lightly moist, never soggy.
• Humidity: high; loves closed terrariums and vivariums.
• Temperature: very well suited to India's warm conditions, roughly 15 to 30°C.
• Difficulty: very easy, one of the fastest, hardiest bromeliads.

Styling and terrarium use

Its narrow, upright form is perfect for tucking into tighter spots in a vivarium or the planted land zone of a paludarium, and it clumps to fill space over time. The water-holding tube suits dart-frog vivariums. Grow it emersed, above the waterline; it is not an aquatic plant and must not be submerged. Like most bromeliads it is non-toxic and pet-friendly around cats and dogs.

Propagation

Billbergias are generous puppers: after flowering each rosette sends up several offsets, or "pups," that quickly build a clump. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on.
