Hohenbergia 'Karla' is a robust, urn-shaped bromeliad with a sturdy rosette that holds water in its central cup, a handsome, architectural plant for vivariums, paludariums and larger terrariums. Hohenbergias are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that store water in a firm central vase, or cup, and are grown for their bold, structural form. 'Karla' colours up in good light and brings real presence to a planted layout.

Origin and form

Hohenbergias are native to tropical Central and South America and the Caribbean, growing on trees and rock in bright, humid positions. 'Karla' forms a strong, symmetrical urn of broad leaves that firm up and take on colour in good light, giving a sculptural silhouette even between flowerings.

The leaf margins can carry small spines, so handle with care and site it away from delicate animals. Grow it emersed, above the waterline; it is not an aquatic plant and must not be submerged. Like most bromeliads it is non-toxic and pet-friendly around cats and dogs.

Propagation

Each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on to multiply your collection.
