What is Neoregelia?
Neoregelia (pronounced nee-oh-reh-jee-lee-ah) is a genus of ~140 species in the Bromeliaceae family, native to Brazilian rainforests. Unlike other bromeliads, Neoregelia flowers stay hidden deep inside the central cup — but the whole centre of the plant turns brilliant red, pink, purple, orange or striped when bloom approaches. That coloured centre holds for months, longer than most true flower spikes in other genera.

Frequently asked questions
What makes Neoregelia different from other bromeliads?
Neoregelia flowers stay hidden inside the cup — the entire centre of the plant turns colour instead of throwing a flower spike. That coloured centre holds for 3–6 months, longer than most flower spikes in other genera.
Which Neoregelia is best for beginners?
Neoregelia ‘Dynamite’ or ‘Fireup’ (Medium size) — forgiving, vivid centre, quick to colour. For nano tanks, Neoregelia ‘Volcano’ (Mini) is our top pick and cheapest entry.
Are Neoregelia good for dart-frog vivariums?
Yes — Neoregelia Mini varieties are the international standard for dart-frog vivariums. The small central cups become egg-laying and tadpole-raising sites.
Why is my Neoregelia losing its colour?
Almost always insufficient light. Neoregelia produces its coloured centre in response to strong light. Move closer to a bright window and colour typically returns in 4–8 weeks. See our troubleshooting guide.
How big does a Neoregelia get?
Depends on the size classification: Mini reaches 8–15 cm, Medium 15–25 cm, Large 25–40 cm mature. Individual varieties vary within each size band.
