Neoregelia 'Tri Colour Rose' (Large) is a bold feature bromeliad washed in rose, cream and green tones, a striking centrepiece for vivariums, paludariums and larger terrariums. Neoregelias are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that hold water in a central cup, or vase, and colour up brilliantly in good light, which makes them some of the most rewarding tropical bromeliads for planted setups.

Origin and form

Neoregelias come from the humid forests of Brazil and neighbouring South America, growing on trees in bright, filtered light. 'Tri Colour Rose' builds a broad, large rosette marked in rose, cream and green, and bright, indirect light lifts the rosy tones to their strongest. It makes a generous, eye-catching form.

Styling and terrarium use

A bold centrepiece for larger vivariums, the planted land zone of a paludarium, or a roomy terrarium, and its water-holding cup makes it a favourite for dart-frog vivariums. Its leaf margins can carry fine teeth, so handle with care. Pair it with ferns and mosses so the tricolour rosette leads the scene. Grow it emersed, above the waterline; it is not an aquatic plant and must not be submerged. Like most bromeliads it is non-toxic and pet-friendly around cats and dogs.

Propagation

Each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on to grow your collection for free.
