Planted Tank Setup: The Complete India Walkthrough

Setting up your first planted tank is one of the most rewarding things you can do in the aquarium hobby, a real, living ecosystem in a glass box on your desk. This is the step-by-step India guide: what to buy, what order to do it in, how to plant, how to cycle, how to avoid the mistakes that kill most first planted tanks.

Follow this walkthrough and in about six weeks you’ll have a stable, planted, fish-safe tank you’re proud of. Skip steps and you’ll be one of the beginners who says “I tried live plants and they all died.” The difference between those two outcomes is entirely in the setup phase.

What you need before you start

Six essentials for any working planted tank setup:

  1. Aquarium tank - glass rectangular, 1-4 feet
  2. Nutrient substrate - aqua soil like ADA Amazonia (feeds roots)
  3. Planted-tank LED light - full-spectrum, not a household white LED
  4. Filter - canister, HOB or sponge (matched to tank size)
  5. Fertilizer - all-in-one liquid + root tabs
  6. Water conditioner - dechlorinator + beneficial bacteria for cycling

CO₂ is optional, many beautiful low-tech planted tanks run without it. You can add liquid CO₂ (Sunken Garden Boost, Seachem Excel) later if you want faster growth.

Step 1 - Pick the right tank size

Your first planted tank should be at least 2 feet (60 L). Smaller is cheaper but harder to keep stable; water parameters swing fast in low-volume tanks. Larger is more forgiving.

  • 1 ft / 15-30 L - nano scape. Cheapest to build (₹3,000-6,000 all-in) but least forgiving. Great for shrimp or a single betta. See our nano planted tank setup guide.
  • 2 ft / 60 L - the beginner sweet spot. Stable, affordable (₹8,000-15,000 all-in), and fits a small community.
  • 3 ft / 100-120 L - the aquascaper’s favourite. Best proportions for planting, room for a full fish community.
  • 4 ft+ / 200 L+ - large planted tanks. Very stable, dramatic layouts possible, larger upfront investment.

Step 2 - Buy your substrate

The substrate is what makes or breaks most planted tanks. Skip this step, use gravel or play sand and your rooted plants (Amazon sword, Cryptocoryne, Vallisneria) will slowly starve.

ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia Ver.2 9L
ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia Ver.2 (9L) - the gold-standard planted substrate. ₹3,500

How much soil do you need?

  • 1 ft tank: 2-3 kg (about a third of a 9L bag)
  • 2 ft tank: 5-6 kg (about two-thirds of a 9L bag)
  • 3 ft tank: full 9L bag
  • 4 ft tank: 18L (2 bags)

Aim for a 4-6 cm layer, sloped higher at the back for depth.

Step 3 - Add hardscape (rocks + driftwood)

Hardscape gives your scape structure. Before planting, arrange:

  • Rocks - dragon stone, seiryu stone, or local river rock. Position 1-3 focal rocks for asymmetric interest.
  • Driftwood - spider wood, Malaysian driftwood, or manzanita. Soak for 1-2 weeks first to sink.

Follow the rule of thirds; don’t centre everything. Off-centre focal points look far more natural.

Step 4 - Install the light

Regular household white LEDs won’t grow demanding plants. You need a planted-tank LED with red and blue spectrum. Match wattage to tank size:

Tank size Recommended light Price
1 ft Bluepet N6 Neo+ (6W) or Neo-Helios Nano S3 (13W) ₹300-₹1,000
2 ft Sobo AL-380 (15.5W) or Neo-Helios XP-300 (16W) ₹980-₹3,200
3 ft Neo-Helios XP-600 (32W) or Chihiros WRGB Slim ₹4,800-₹12,600
4 ft+ Chihiros WRGB II Pro (or 2× Neo-Helios XP-600) ₹22,000+
Neo-Helios XP-600 Flat LED
Neo-Helios XP-600 (32W) - ultra-slim full-spectrum LED. ₹4,800

Set it on a timer for 6-8 hours per day. Start with 6 in a new tank to prevent algae. See our planted aquarium lighting guide for full details.

Step 5 - Install the filter

Planted tanks want gentle-to-moderate flow, not a raging waterfall. Canister filters are the aquascaping standard: they hide neatly under the cabinet and hold lots of biological media.

Step 6 - Fill with dechlorinated water

Never pour tap water directly onto aqua soil; it disturbs the soil and clouds the tank for days. Instead:

  1. Place a plate or plastic sheet on top of the soil
  2. Fill slowly through a hose into the plate
  3. Water flows outward over the plate without disturbing the soil
  4. Once half-filled, remove the plate carefully

Immediately add dechlorinator; Indian tap water contains chlorine that kills beneficial bacteria and stresses plants:

Step 7 - Plant your plants

Start with easy plants. Advanced species like HC Cuba and red Rotalas are for later. Beginner-safe picks for India:

  • Foreground: Cryptocoryne parva, Dwarf Sagittaria, Marimo moss ball
  • Midground: Anubias nana, Cryptocoryne wendtii, Bucephalandra (attached to hardscape)
  • Background: Java fern, Vallisneria, Amazon sword, Hygrophila polysperma
  • Non-substrate: Java moss (tied to driftwood), Amazon Frogbit (floating)

Critical rule: never bury the rhizome of Anubias, Java fern, Bucephalandra or mosses. These are epiphytes; attach them to hardscape with cotton thread or glue, roots free, above the substrate.

Step 8 - Add beneficial bacteria + start cycling

Fish waste creates ammonia, which is toxic. Beneficial bacteria convert ammonia → nitrite → nitrate. Growing this bacteria colony is called “cycling” and takes 2-4 weeks.

Speed up cycling with a beneficial bacteria starter:

Sunken Garden Good Bacteria

Test water at week 2 and week 3 with an ammonia test kit. When ammonia and nitrite both read zero, the tank is cycled and safe for fish. Do not add fish before this.

Step 9 - Start fertilizing (from week 2)

Aqua soil releases nutrients for months, but the water column also needs feeding. Start dosing all-in-one liquid fertilizer twice a week from week 2:

Sunken Garden Vibrance
Sunken Garden Vibrance - all-in-one Dutch-style fertilizer. ₹490

For heavy root feeders (Amazon sword, Vallisneria, Crypts) add root tabs every 2-3 months:

Sunken Garden Root Tabs (6+1) - for heavy root feeders. ₹290

Complete dosing details in our aquarium fertilizers explained guide.

Step 10 - Add your fish (week 4-6)

Once ammonia and nitrite read zero, add fish gradually, not all at once. Add 3-5 fish, wait a week, add more. This lets the bacteria colony scale to match the bioload.

Start with small, hardy species: guppies, tetras, corydoras, harlequin rasboras. Save more sensitive fish (discus, angelfish, apistogramma) for months 2-3 when the tank is fully mature.

Weekly maintenance routine

Every week, same day, 30 minutes:

  1. 25-30% water change with dechlorinated water
  2. Wipe front glass with magnetic scraper
  3. Trim fast-growing stems (Hygrophila, Rotala); replant cuttings
  4. Dose all-in-one fertilizer
  5. Check fish and plant health

The most common planted-tank-setup mistake we see

A customer in Bangalore set up their first planted tank last year and messaged us in week 3 in despair. Plants melting, water cloudy, algae blooming. They’d bought good substrate and a proper Neo-Helios light, but they’d added their fish on day 3. No cycling. No beneficial bacteria. The ammonia spike killed the good bacteria on the plants, the plants melted, and the algae exploded because the plants stopped competing.

We had them do a big 60% water change, dose Good Bacteria, keep the fish (they were still alive, just stressed), and wait. Two weeks later: ammonia zero, plants recovered, algae dying back. The fix wasn’t new products; it was time. Planted tanks reward patience. Skip the cycle and you fight for months. Cycle properly and the tank runs itself.

Frequently asked questions

What do you need to set up a planted tank?

Six essentials: nutrient-rich substrate, planted-tank LED light, filter, all-in-one liquid fertilizer, root tabs and water conditioner (dechlorinator + beneficial bacteria). CO₂ is optional; low-tech tanks work without it.

How long does it take to set up a planted tank?

Physical setup takes an afternoon (4-6 hours). Cycling to fish-ready takes 2-4 weeks. First plant establishment 4-6 weeks. Fully mature look: 3-6 months.

Is CO₂ required for a planted aquarium?

No. Easy plants (Anubias, Java fern, Cryptocoryne, Vallisneria, mosses) grow without CO₂. Adding CO₂ speeds growth 3-5× and enables demanding species.
