Why CO₂ matters
Carbon is the largest single nutrient plants use plant biomass is roughly 40% carbon by dry weight. In a regular fish tank, dissolved CO₂ comes from fish respiration and is usually 1–3 mg/L. Plant-optimal levels are 20–30 mg/L. So most planted tanks are running carbon-starved by a factor of 10 or more.
Add CO₂ and three things happen:
- Plants grow noticeably faster (often 3–5x).
- Red plants actually go red; colours intensify across the board.
- Healthy fast-growing plants outcompete algae, so algae problems usually decrease (counter-intuitive but true).
You don't have to use CO₂, plenty of beautiful low-tech tanks exist but if you want a real aquascape, this is the lever that unlocks it.
Two ways to add CO₂ (start simple)
Option 1: Liquid carbon (the easy starting point)
Liquid carbon is a daily-dosed bottle of glutaraldehyde-based solution that provides a smaller, milder carbon source plants can use. It's not as effective as pressurised CO₂, but it's the cheapest, easiest, no-hardware option and it noticeably helps growth in a low-tech tank. It also has some anti-algae effect on certain types like black beard algae.
How to dose: follow the bottle, generally 1 ml per 50L per day, ideally just before lights on. Always under-dose first and observe. Warning: liquid carbon is toxic to vallisneria, some mosses and shrimp at higher doses stick to label strength.

Option 2: Pressurised CO₂ (the real upgrade)
A pressurised CO₂ system uses a CO₂ cylinder, a regulator and a diffuser to inject actual carbon dioxide gas into the water. This is the system used in every serious aquascape you've ever admired online. It's a bigger upfront investment, but the results are dramatic.
A typical Indian setup includes:
- CO₂ cylinder - a 2 kg or 5 kg refillable cylinder is standard.
- Regulator - a dual-gauge regulator with a solenoid valve (so CO₂ turns off with the lights at night).
- Bubble counter - lets you set the bubbles-per-second rate.
- Check valve - stops water siphoning back into the regulator.
- Diffuser or reactor - a ceramic diffuser releases fine bubbles into the tank; a reactor dissolves CO₂ inline with the canister filter.
- Drop checker - a small indicator that turns green when CO₂ is at the right level.
- CO₂-resistant tubing - standard airline tubing leaks gas; you need proper CO₂ tubing.

How to safely dial in pressurised CO₂
- Time it with the lights. Set the solenoid to turn CO₂ on 1 hour before lights on, and off 1 hour before lights off. There's no point dosing CO₂ in the dark.
- Start low. Set the bubble counter to a low rate (say, 1 bubble per second on a 60L tank) and watch the drop checker over 24 hours. Green = 20–30 mg/L, the target. Blue = under ~20 mg/L, too little. Yellow = over ~35 mg/L, too much, back it off.
- Watch the fish carefully. If fish gather at the surface gasping, CO₂ is too high, immediately turn it off and increase aeration.
- Surface agitation matters. Good surface movement keeps oxygen high, which lets you safely run higher CO₂ levels.
- Pair with strong fertilization. Plants growing faster need more nutrients, if you increase CO₂, increase ferts.

The day my own scape went green
Years ago we ran a planted 2 ft tank in our own setup with high light, daily fertilizer dosing… and no CO₂. We did everything "right" on paper, ADA aqua soil, premium ferts, eight hours of bright light and within six weeks the front glass was carpeted in green dust algae, the carpet plant was thinning, and red plants were green. Frustrating, because every product label said the tank should be flourishing.
We added a small pressurised CO₂ system from a generic Indian regulator, ran it 1 hour before to 1 hour before lights, drop checker green. Within ten days, the dust algae was gone, the Ludwigia turned bright red, and the carpet thickened so fast we were trimming weekly. Nothing else changed except CO₂. The lesson became a rule we tell every aquascaper: if you're running strong light + good ferts and the plants still aren't thriving, the missing variable is almost always carbon. You don't need CO₂ for every tank — but if you want a real aquascape, it's the missing piece that most beginners spend months not realising they need.

- Running CO₂ 24/7 - wastes gas, suffocates fish at night. Use a solenoid timer.
- No drop checker - you're flying blind without one.
- Too high, too fast - ramp up over a week, not in one go.

- CO₂ without ferts - plants will hit a wall and algae will move in.
