Fair warning up front: nano tanks look easy but are actually less forgiving than 3-4 ft tanks. Small water volume = fast parameter swings. Do the setup properly and you’ll love it. Rush it and you’ll be frustrated in a month.

Why nano tanks are (slightly) harder than big tanks

Everyone assumes small = easier. It’s the opposite:

• Faster parameter swings. A 30 L tank warms up, cools down, and shifts pH faster than a 100 L tank. Less water = less buffer.
• Every fish counts. One fish in 20 L is like 5 fish in 100 L for bioload. Overstocking is easy.
• Algae is harder to control. Light hits the substrate more directly; nutrient imbalances happen faster.
• Less room for error. Missed water change, forgotten dechlorinator, over-dosing fertilizer — all hit harder in a small tank.

None of this makes nano tanks bad — just plan properly and be consistent with maintenance.

What you need for a nano planted tank setup

1. Tank

Options in India:

• 1 ft / 30 cm — typically 15-25 L. Best for a betta + shrimp or a shrimp-only tank.
• 1.5 ft / 45 cm — typically 30-40 L. Room for a small school (6 small fish) + shrimp.
• 2 ft / 60 cm — typically 55-70 L. The sweet spot for a proper nano scape.

Rimless glass tanks look best (cleaner aquascape aesthetic) but cost more. Standard rimmed tanks work fine for beginners.

2. Aqua soil (still non-negotiable)

Nano tanks need proper substrate as much as bigger tanks. A 9L bag of ADA Amazonia lasts across a 1 ft, 2 ft and 3 ft tank easily:

4. Filter

Nano tanks work best with gentle filtration:

• 1 ft: sponge filter driven by an air pump (shrimp-safe, betta-safe, cheap)
• 1.5-2 ft: small internal (Aquael ASAP), HOB (Sobo WP-607H), or sponge

5. Fertilizer + water conditioning

Dose smaller amounts — nano tanks need less fertilizer than 3-4 ft tanks. Half the recommended dose is a safe starting point.

Nano planted tank setup: step-by-step

1. Rinse the tank. Never use soap or detergent. Water only.
2. Add substrate. Pour aqua soil to 4-5 cm depth. Slope higher at back.
3. Arrange hardscape. One or two focal rocks + a small piece of driftwood is plenty in a nano tank. Less is more.
4. Attach epiphytes. Tie Anubias nana, Java fern (small varieties), Bucephalandra to hardscape with cotton thread. Rhizomes above the substrate.
5. Install the light + filter. Set light on a timer for 6 hours to start.
6. Fill with dechlorinated water. Pour onto a plate to avoid soil disturbance. Use Anti Chlorine at full dose.
7. Plant rooted species. Cryptocoryne parva or wendtii, small Vallisneria nana, dwarf hairgrass if you’re ambitious.
8. Add floating plants. A small handful of Amazon Frogbit or Salvinia.
9. Add beneficial bacteria. Sunken Garden Good Bacteria to start the cycle.
10. Cycle for 3-4 weeks. Nano tanks often take longer to cycle than bigger tanks. Test ammonia + nitrite before adding fish.
11. Add fish gradually. 2-3 fish at a time, spaced a week apart. Don’t rush.

Best plants for nano planted tanks

Small tanks want proportional plants — nothing that outgrows the tank in a month:

• Anubias nana “petite” — miniature Anubias, fingernail-size leaves. Perfect for nano.
• Bucephalandra — compact epiphyte, jewel-like leaves, slow growing.
• Cryptocoryne parva — the smallest crypt, foreground carpet.

The nano tank that beat a 4-foot tank’s aesthetic
