Vriesea 'Tiger Tim' carries bold, tiger-like cross-banding on soft, completely spineless leaves, a striking yet gentle bromeliad for planted terrariums, vivariums and paludariums. Vrieseas are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that hold water in a central cup and are prized for patterned foliage and smooth, spine-free leaves. That smoothness makes 'Tiger Tim' a favourite for frog and reptile vivariums, where sharp leaf margins are best avoided.

Origin and form

Vrieseas come from the humid forests of Central and South America, growing on trees in bright, filtered light. 'Tiger Tim' forms a soft, open rosette of arching green leaves crossed by dark tiger-like bands, and bright, indirect light keeps that banding at its clearest. Unlike spiny bromeliads, its leaf edges are smooth to the touch.

Propagation

Each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on to grow more.
