Tillandsia stricta 'Silver' is a soft, silvery air plant with fine, fuzzy leaves that erupts into a bright pink bract at flowering. Air plants are epiphytic bromeliads, members of the tropical Bromeliaceae family like the pineapple, that grow with no soil at all, drawing moisture and nutrients through fine silvery scales on their leaves. The dense scaling gives this stricta its frosted look and makes it one of the most beautiful, low-maintenance tropical bromeliads for open terrariums, glass displays, mounted driftwood art and vivarium backgrounds.

Origin and form

Stricta is native to South America, and the 'Silver' form is prized for its extra-fine, fuzzy, heavily silvered leaves. That dense trichome coating helps it handle brighter, drier air, and at flowering it sends up a vivid pink bract that contrasts beautifully with the frosted foliage. It clumps readily over time.

Care at a glance

• Light: bright, indirect light; the silver form takes slightly brighter conditions well. Avoid harsh midday sun.
• Water: no soil needed. Mist 2 to 3 times a week, or soak for 15 to 20 minutes weekly, then shake off excess and let it dry fully within a few hours.
• Airflow: essential. Air plants must dry out between waterings, so they are not suited to sealed closed terrariums.
• Temperature: easy in India's warm climate, roughly 15 to 32°C; never leave it constantly wet.

Styling and display

Mount stricta 'Silver' on driftwood, cork or rock, rest it in an open holder, or set it in an open glass terrarium; its frosted leaves and pink bloom make a lovely display that fills out as it clumps. It also suits the above-water background of a vivarium or paludarium. Pair it with other Tillandsia, moss and driftwood. Grow it above the waterline; a weekly soak is fine, but it must never be left submerged. Like most bromeliads it is non-toxic and safe around cats and dogs.

Propagation

After flowering, it produces offsets, or "pups," that quickly form a clump. Leave them to cluster, or separate mature pups to start new plants.
