Which tanks is it best for?
The AL-180 is made for nano planted aquariums and desktop tanks around 20 cm. It gives enough light for easy low-light plants such as Anubias nana, mosses, Bucephalandra and small Cryptocoryne, and looks great on a rimless nano aquascape. For larger tanks, step up to the Sobo AL-380 (40–50 cm) or AL-480 (50–60 cm). For choosing plants by light level, see our planted aquarium lighting guide.
How to use it
Sit the lamp across the nano tank on its brackets and run it 7–8 hours a day on a timer. Nano tanks are small and algae-prone, so keep the photoperiod tight, include a dark night period, and keep the tank out of direct sunlight. See how many hours should aquarium lights be on and aquarium light settings to prevent algae.
Frequently asked questions
What tank size is the Sobo AL-180 for?
Nano tanks around 20 cm — it is the smallest light in Sobo’s AL COB planted series.
Is it good for a nano planted tank?
Yes. Its 8W full-spectrum COB output suits easy low-light nano plants and renders colour brightly.
How many hours should I run it?
7–8 hours a day on a timer. Keep it tight on a nano tank, which can show algae quickly.
Can it grow demanding carpet plants?
On a shallow nano tank with CO2 it can support some carpets, but for high-light carpets a stronger light is better.
Does it run hot?
No. The COB LEDs and aluminium casing run cool and are energy-efficient, ideal for small desktop tanks.
Should I use a cover glass?
A glass or acrylic cover is recommended to protect the light from moisture and extend its life.
