Cryptanthus 'Ruby Star' (Cryptanthus bivittatus) is a small terrestrial bromeliad, an "earth star" with a ruby-red rosette lit by paler central striping. Cryptanthus are the ground-dwelling members of the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae), the tropical group that also includes the pineapple. Unlike the cup-forming tropical bromeliads, earth stars have no central water reservoir; they take water and nutrients through the substrate. Compact, colourful and genuinely low-maintenance, 'Ruby Star' is one of the best terrarium bromeliads for adding two-tone colour right at ground level.

Origin and form

Cryptanthus are native to the shaded, humid forest floors of Brazil. 'Ruby Star' grows flat and compact, its ruby rosette crossed by a lighter central stripe that gives lovely detail up close. Brighter, indirect light intensifies the ruby tones, while shade softens them toward green.
