Billbergia 'Northern Light' is admired for its pale, frosted, silvery foliage, a cool-toned tubular bromeliad that lightens up vivariums, paludariums and terrariums. Billbergias are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) from the forests of Brazil, easily told apart by their tall, tubular rosettes. They hold water in that central tube, grow fast, clump freely and are among the hardiest bromeliads you can keep.

Origin and form

Billbergias are native to Brazil, where they grow on trees in bright, humid forest. 'Northern Light' forms an upright, tube-shaped vase dusted with a fine, silvery scurf that gives its frosted look, and bright, indirect light keeps that dusting most pronounced. Like all Billbergias it can throw a spectacular, if short-lived, pendant flower.

Grow it emersed, above the waterline; it is not an aquatic plant and must not be submerged. Like most bromeliads it is non-toxic and pet-friendly around cats and dogs.

Propagation

Billbergias are generous puppers: after flowering each rosette sends up several offsets, or "pups," that quickly build a clump. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on.
