Aechmea 'Primera' is a clean, classic bromeliad with a robust, symmetrical rosette, a dependable, good-looking choice for terrariums, vivariums and paludariums. Aechmeas are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that hold water in a central vase, or cup, rather than feeding mainly through the roots. That makes them among the easiest, most forgiving tropical bromeliads: keep the cup topped, give bright light, and they settle in quickly.

Origin and form

Aechmeas come from the forests of Central and South America, growing on trees in bright, filtered light. 'Primera' forms a strong, tidy, symmetrical rosette in glossy green with the classic water-holding cup, making it a clean green anchor for any layout.

Care at a glance

Its clean green rosette sets off more colourful plants beautifully. Grow it emersed, above the waterline; it is not an aquatic plant and must not be submerged. Like most bromeliads it is non-toxic and pet-friendly around cats and dogs.

Propagation

Each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on to multiply your collection.
