Aechmea 'Pink Star' brings a soft pink blush and a star-shaped rosette to terrariums, vivariums and paludariums, a pretty, easy-care bromeliad with plenty of charm. Aechmeas are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that hold water in a central vase, or cup. That makes 'Pink Star' as practical as it is pretty: keep the cup topped, give it bright light, and the centre flushes pink.

Origin and form

Aechmeas come from the forests of Central and South America, growing on trees in bright, filtered light. 'Pink Star' opens into a neat, star-shaped rosette with the classic water-holding cup, and in bright, indirect light the centre takes on a soft pink blush, fading toward green in lower light.

Propagation

Each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on to grow your collection.
