Aechmea 'Orange Torch' is all about the flower, a vivid, torch-like orange inflorescence rising from a neat green rosette. Aechmeas are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that hold water in a central vase, or cup, and are famous for some of the longest-lasting flowers in the plant world. Keep the cup topped, give it bright light and warm, humid air, and 'Orange Torch' becomes a real showpiece for a vivarium or paludarium.

Origin and form

Aechmeas come from the forests of Central and South America, growing on trees in bright, filtered light. 'Orange Torch' holds a neat green rosette with the classic water-holding cup, and at flowering it sends up a bold, torch-like orange spike that holds its colour impressively long. Bright, indirect light encourages the strongest flowering colour.

Styling and terrarium use

Set it where the torch can rise above surrounding greenery, with ferns and moss at its feet. Grow it emersed, above the waterline; it is not an aquatic plant and must not be submerged. Like most bromeliads it is non-toxic and pet-friendly around cats and dogs.

Propagation

Each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on to grow your collection.
