Aechmea 'Lorie's Pride' is a handsome hybrid bromeliad with a glossy, well-formed rosette that makes an easy, elegant addition to terrariums, vivariums and paludariums. Aechmeas are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that hold water in a central vase, or cup, rather than feeding mainly through the roots. That makes 'Lorie's Pride' a forgiving, low-maintenance tropical bromeliad: keep the cup topped, give bright light, and it asks for very little.

Origin and form

Aechmeas come from the forests of Central and South America, growing on trees in bright, filtered light. 'Lorie's Pride' forms a glossy, tidy, well-balanced rosette with the classic water-holding cup, giving structured tropical greenery that anchors a planted scene.

Propagation

Each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on to multiply your collection.
