You can buy live aquarium plants in India from specialist online plant sellers, general online marketplaces, local aquarium shops and hobbyist groups, and the safest choice is any seller who shows photos of the real plants, tells you how they were grown (tissue culture, submersed or emersed), and ships fast with live-arrival cover. Prices vary a lot, so compare the cost per stem or per portion rather than per pot, and plan to quarantine and rinse every new plant before it goes in your tank. This guide compares where to buy, what to check, how to order safely in Indian summers and monsoons, and what to pick if you are on a tight budget.
Quick answer: For beginners, a local aquarium shop (so you can inspect the plants) or a specialist online seller with live-arrival cover is best. Buy hardy plants first: Anubias, Java fern, Java moss, water wisteria, hornwort and Vallisneria. Skip anything dry, wilting or sold without a species name.
Fish Bazaar note: at the time of writing we do not list live aquatic plants on the store. We stock the planted-tank supplies shown below, and you can message us on WhatsApp if you want help planning a plant list.
Where to buy live aquarium plants in India
There is no single best source; each has trade-offs. Use this table to decide.
| Where | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Specialist online plant sellers | Wide choice, tissue culture cups, rare plants, mounted plants | Shipping time in summer and monsoon; check live-arrival policy |
| General online marketplaces | Convenience, bundles and starter packs | Listings without species names, mixed quality, wilted deliveries |
| Local aquarium shops | Inspecting plants first, same-day planting, no shipping stress | Smaller choice; some plants are grown out of water and will melt |
| Aquarium markets (for example Galiff Street in Kolkata) | Large choice and low prices | Variable quality; inspect and quarantine everything |
| Hobbyist groups and aquarium clubs | Free or cheap trimmings and plantlets from healthy tanks | Hitchhiker snails and algae; quarantine before use |
| Garden nurseries | Hardy floating or marginal plants for ponds and large bowls | Not true aquarium plants; many cannot live fully submerged |

Petco, PetSmart, Lowe's, Home Depot and Walmart: what is the Indian equivalent?
Search results often show questions such as whether Petco, PetSmart, Lowe's, Home Depot or Walmart sell live aquarium plants. Those are United States retailers. Petco and PetSmart carry live aquarium plants in many stores, though stock varies by location, while Lowe's and Home Depot mainly sell garden plants and may carry pond plants seasonally. None of them operate in India. Here, the equivalents are local aquarium shops, online plant sellers and marketplaces, and hobbyist communities. The buying rules in this guide apply wherever you live.
Know what you are buying: five ways plants are sold
| Form | What it is | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bunch or bundle | Cut stems tied together, usually grown submersed | Fast growth, good value, already adapted to water | Perishable in transit; may have snails |
| Potted plant | Plant in a pot with rockwool or gravel, often grown out of water | Strong roots, large size | May melt and drop leaves; remove rockwool; pesticide risk |
| Tissue culture (TC) cup | Plantlets grown in sterile gel in a small cup | Free from snails, pests and algae; easy to split | Small at first; rinse the gel off fully |
| Mounted plant | Anubias, Java fern or moss attached to wood or rock | Ready to place; no planting needed | Cost more; check attachment |
| Seeds or bulbs | Hairgrass seeds, Aponogeton or Crinum bulbs | Cheap | Seeds often fail; bulbs can rot |
Tissue culture is popular because it is clean. Open the cup, pull the plants out, rinse off all the gel under dechlorinated water and split the clump into small portions. For stem plants and carpet plants, TC gives the most plants per rupee and almost no risk of pests, so it is a smart choice for carpets; see our guide to carpet plants for aquariums.
What to check before you pay
- Species name. A listing for "aquarium plant" with no name is a gamble. Look for a common and scientific name, for example Hygrophila difformis (water wisteria).
- How it was grown. Ask whether the plant is grown submersed, emersed or in tissue culture. Emersed plants will melt and regrow; that is normal but surprises beginners.
- Real photos. Ask for a photo of the exact plants you will receive, including roots, and a close-up of the leaves.
- Quantity. Check the number of stems, rhizome pieces or portions, not just "one pack".
- Packaging and shipping speed. Plants should travel damp, not wet, in a bag with air, and arrive within about two to three days.
- Live-arrival policy. A good seller replaces or refunds plants that arrive dead or rotten, with photo proof.
- Pests. Ask whether the plants were grown with snails or treated with pesticides, especially if you keep shrimp.
Ordering plants online in India: summer, monsoon and courier tips
Plants are alive and cannot sit in a courier warehouse for a week. Order early in the week so that parcels do not sit over a weekend, and avoid shipping in extreme heat if you can. In summer, a hot van can cook plants; in the monsoon, humidity encourages rot. Ask the seller to pack plants wrapped in damp paper, with the bag partly inflated, and to ship by the fastest courier available to your pincode. When the parcel arrives, open it straight away, rinse the plants in dechlorinated water, discard anything black or slimy and rest the rest in a bucket for an hour before planting. Follow the steps in how to plant aquarium plants and quarantine as described in our plant dipping and quarantine guide.
Indian online plant sellers compared: one characteristic each
We looked through the websites of eleven Indian sellers that list live aquarium or aquatic plants, to give you a neutral picture rather than a ranking. We do not sell live plants, we have no commercial arrangement with any seller below, and the order is not a ranking. Each entry highlights the one characteristic that stood out on the seller's own site. This is based on what each site stated on 5 October 2026; prices, shipping days and refund terms change often, so confirm them on the seller's page before you order.
- Bunnycart (India-wide; grows the plants it sells). Farm-direct, with a published live-arrival guarantee (claim within 24 hours with at least two clear photos of the sealed packaging; refund to the original payment method).
- Aqua By Nature (Bangalore). The widest tissue-culture and international-brand range of the group (250+ varieties, 50+ tissue-culture), with a strict, replacement-only policy for fully melted or decayed arrivals in listed cities.
- Himadri Aquatics (Alappuzha, Kerala). Harvests from its own farms and ships on fixed weekdays only (Monday and Tuesday), so parcels do not sit in transit over a weekend.
- AQUAStore.in (India). Broad stem-plant selection at low per-stem prices, mostly in the ₹74 to ₹105 band for background, midground and foreground plants.
- Aqua Forest Biotech (Satara, Maharashtra). Runs its own tissue-culture lab, with plants labelled by variety and free shipping above ₹2,500.
- Splashy Fin (Bangalore). Tissue-culture specialist selling cups of 5 to 8 plantlets, with a discount on six or more cups and in-store pickup.
- Aquatic Plants (aquaticplants.co.in) (Bangalore). Plant-first hobbyist seller with WhatsApp tracking and Monday to Thursday dispatch by express courier; it openly warns that plants may look different after transit and that same-family substitutes are possible.
- Aqua Club Online (India, with a physical store). Online store backed by a physical mega store, with a strong focus on ADA-style planted tanks and a range of 250+ varieties including tissue culture.
- Chennai Aquarium (Adyar, Chennai). A showroom-based shop that also builds custom and high-tech planted tanks, so you can combine plants with hardware and setup help.
- Fins N Flora (Bangalore). A general aquarium store where plants sit alongside filters, lights, CO2 and fertilizers, which suits buyers who want one shopping basket.
- Green Moss Aquarium (Thrissur, Kerala). Positions itself on price ("best price in India") and offers a digital showroom app for browsing.
How to use this list. If your main worry is a bad parcel, compare the written live-arrival terms first: some sellers refund, some only replace, and some limit cover to certain cities or to a 24-hour reporting window with photos. If your main goal is a clean tank, tissue-culture cups from a lab or specialist are the lowest-risk way to avoid snails and pests. If you want to see plants before buying, a shop with a physical showroom is the safer route. Several sellers state that regular plants can arrive with snails or pests, and that some plants are grown out of water, so quarantine everything, whoever you buy from. Not every seller publishes plant prices or policies clearly; if a site does not, ask on WhatsApp or by email and keep the reply.
Sellers we could not verify for this guide, because their sites blocked automated reading or showed no current plant listings, are not included. One Tamil Nadu seller we found was showing a pause on orders at the time of checking, so check status before relying on any listing. If you are a seller and a detail here is out of date, message us and we will update it.
Aquarium plants on a budget: under ₹100 and cheap starter packs
Many people search for aquarium plants under ₹100 or cheap bundles. You can plant a surprisingly good tank on a small budget if you pick tough, fast-growing species and buy small, then let them multiply. The cheapest wins are usually floating plants, hornwort, Java moss, water wisteria and Vallisneria, which are inexpensive and grow quickly. Our guide to the fastest growing aquarium plants lists the best choices. Cuttings and plantlets from a friend or club cost nothing but must be quarantined.
If you are buying a ready-made pack, here is a sensible starter plan for a 2 ft (about 60 litre) tank.
| Plant | How many | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Anubias nana or Java fern (mounted) | 2–3 | On wood and rock, any level |
| Water wisteria or similar stem plant | 1 bunch of 5–8 stems | Back and sides |
| Vallisneria or Amazon sword | 1–2 | Back corners; add a root tab |
| Java moss | 1 small portion | Tied to wood |
| Floating plant (frogbit or similar) | A handful | Surface, calm side |
| Foreground carpet (optional) | 1 TC cup | Front, once you are comfortable |
Buying plants near you: a quick in-store check
If you are searching for aquarium plants near me or a store near me, walk in with a short checklist. Plants should be kept in clean water or damp, not dried out. Leaves should be green or the colour typical for the species, without black patches or holes. Roots of rooted plants should be white or tan, not black or mushy. Look closely for snail eggs, small snails, hydra and thread algae. Ask whether the plant was grown submersed or out of water, and avoid any display tank with sickly fish, because disease can ride on water and nets. Buy only what you can plant that day.
What not to buy
Avoid plants sold dry, wilted or without a name. Do not buy water hyacinth or other species known to be invasive in Indian waterways, and never dump unwanted aquarium plants, snails or water into drains, lakes or rivers; compost them or dry them instead. Be careful with "aquarium plants" that are actually houseplants and cannot live underwater, such as dracaena (lucky bamboo) or pothos; they only grow with leaves above water. See water plants to grow at home for what can and cannot live in water.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I buy live aquarium plants in India?
You can buy them from specialist online plant sellers, general marketplaces, local aquarium shops, aquarium markets and hobbyist groups. Choose a seller who shows real photos, names the species and ships quickly with live-arrival cover.
Where can I purchase live plants for a fish tank?
Local aquarium shops let you inspect plants before buying, while online sellers offer a wider choice. In either case, check the species name, how the plant was grown and whether it is free from snails and pests.
Does Petco or PetSmart sell live aquarium plants?
In the United States, many Petco and PetSmart stores sell live aquarium plants, though stock varies by store. Neither operates in India, where local aquarium shops and online sellers fill the same role.
Can you buy aquarium plants at Lowe's, Home Depot or Walmart?
These are US stores. Lowe's and Home Depot mostly sell garden plants and seasonal pond plants, and Walmart may stock a small selection of aquarium plants in some stores or through online sellers. In India, use aquarium shops or specialist online sellers.
Are plants bought online safe for my fish and shrimp?
Usually yes after quarantine and rinsing. Plants grown out of water may carry snails, pests or pesticide residue, so quarantine them for two to three weeks and rinse well, especially if you keep shrimp.
What is the cheapest way to start a planted tank?
Buy small amounts of tough, fast-growing species such as hornwort, water wisteria, Vallisneria, Java moss and floating plants, and let them multiply. Cuttings from a friend or hobby club cost nothing but should be quarantined.
What is a tissue culture aquarium plant?
A plant grown from a tiny piece in sterile gel in a cup. It is free from snails, pests and algae. Rinse off all the gel before planting and split the clump into small portions.
How long can aquarium plants survive in a courier parcel?
Hardy plants usually survive two to three days if packed damp with air in the bag. After four to five days many start to rot, so choose fast shipping and open the parcel at once.
Should I buy plants grown in water or out of water?
Submersed (grown in water) plants adapt faster, while emersed (grown out of water) plants are common and cheaper but melt and regrow underwater. Both are fine if you know what to expect.
Are aquarium plant seeds worth buying?
Seeds are cheap, but germination is unreliable in most home tanks. Tissue culture portions are a more dependable way to establish carpet plants.
