Vriesea 'Smudge Grub' is a soft, spineless bromeliad marked with smudged, mottled patterning, an unusual and gentle plant for terrariums, vivariums and paludariums. Vrieseas are epiphytic bromeliads (family Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple) that hold water in a central cup and are grown for their patterned foliage and smooth, spine-free leaves. Origin and form

Vrieseas come from the humid forests of Central and South America, growing on trees in bright, filtered light. 'Smudge Grub' forms a soft, open rosette whose leaves carry irregular, smudged markings, and bright, indirect light keeps the contrast clearest. Its leaf edges are smooth, with none of the spines found on many other bromeliads.

Each rosette flowers once, then produces offsets, or "pups," around its base. Let a pup reach about a third of the parent's size, then separate and pot it on to grow more.
