Alcantarea imperialis is a majestic giant bromeliad, and this green form builds a huge, elegant silver-green rosette, a grand feature plant for very large vivariums, paludariums and standalone display. Alcantareas are among the largest members of the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae, the same tropical group as the pineapple): rock-dwelling, terrestrial giants that hold some water in a broad central cup and develop a wide, symmetrical form over time.

Origin and form

Alcantarea imperialis comes from the mountains of Brazil, where it grows on exposed rock in bright, airy positions. The green form develops a broad, sculptural rosette of arching silver-green leaves and, given years and space, becomes one of the most imposing bromeliads you can grow. It is far too large for small terrariums.

Care at a glance

• Light: bright light, including some gentle direct sun, for the strongest form and colour.
• Water: keep a little clean water in the central cup and let the well-drained mix dry between waterings; drought-tolerant once established.
• Humidity: moderate to high; very adaptable.
• Temperature: thrives in India's warmth, roughly 16 to 32°C, in bright shade or by a bright window.
• Difficulty: easy, a forgiving, sun-tolerant giant.

Styling and terrarium use

A grand feature plant for very large vivariums, the land zone of a big paludarium, or as a standalone statement; it is far too large for small terrariums. The leaf edges can be lightly toothed, so handle with care. Grow it emersed, above the waterline; it is a terrestrial, rock-dwelling bromeliad and must not be submerged.

Propagation

Mature plants produce offsets, or "pups," around the base. Separate a well-rooted pup once it is a good size and pot it into a free-draining mix to grow more, though this giant takes its time.
