Ornaments make a tank look great - until algae, film and detritus dull them. Cleaning them is easy, but the wrong method can poison your fish. Here is how to clean aquarium decorations safely, step by step.
The one rule: never use soap or detergent
Soap, dish liquid and household cleaners leave residues that are toxic to fish and almost impossible to fully rinse off. This is the single most common - and most dangerous - mistake. Everything below is soap-free.
Routine cleaning (do this monthly)
- Remove the ornament and rinse it under running tap water.
- Scrub gently with a soft toothbrush or a dedicated algae brush to lift film and light algae.
- For a deeper clean, soak it in a bucket of warm tank or dechlorinated water and scrub again.
- Rinse thoroughly and return it to the tank.
Stubborn algae or hard build-up
For ornaments caked in algae, two deeper methods work - use them occasionally, not routinely:
- Bleach dip: soak in a 1-part-bleach-to-19-parts-water solution for 10-15 minutes, scrub, then rinse extremely well and soak in heavily dechlorinated water before returning it. Only for non-porous, sealed or plastic pieces.
