A canister filter is the best choice for medium and large aquariums in India because it holds far more filter media than any other type, runs almost silently, and sits hidden in the cabinet below your tank. The right model depends on your tank volume. Below is a clear ladder from nano tanks all the way up to 1,500-litre setups.
This guide covers the Fluval canister range we stock at Fish Bazaar, why canisters outperform top and hang-on-back filters, and how to pick the correct size.
Why choose a canister filter?
- Huge media capacity – multiple trays for mechanical, biological and chemical media, so your water stays stable.
- Quiet – the motor sits outside the tank, in the cabinet.
- Powerful, even flow – ideal for planted tanks, cichlids, goldfish and large community tanks.
- Less frequent maintenance – large volume means longer gaps between cleans.

The 07 Series vs the FX Series
The Fluval 07 Series (107–407) are the everyday workhorse, perfect for the vast majority of home aquariums, ranging from nano to 500 litres. The FX Series (FX2–FX6) are the heavy hitters built for very large tanks, turtle tanks and aquariums with a high bioload, sweeping the tank far harder than a standard canister.
What size canister filter do I need?
Pick a canister rated at or slightly above your tank volume. Always size up rather than down. An oversized filter gives cleaner water and a safety margin for heavy stocking. If you keep goldfish or large cichlids, jump one tier higher than the litre rating suggests.
Don't forget the media
A canister is only as good as what is inside it. Pair yours with quality biological media like Seachem Matrix and a polishing media such as Seachem Purigen and Bio Media. See our full filter media buying guide for what goes in each tray.
Frequently asked questions
Is a canister filter worth it?
For tanks above 100 litres, yes. The larger media capacity keeps water more stable, it runs quietly, and you clean it less often than a top or HOB filter.
Canister vs HOB filter, which is better?
A canister wins on capacity, quietness and power, making it best for larger or planted tanks. A hang-on-back filter is simpler and cheaper, and is a great fit for tanks under 100 litres.
How often do I clean a canister filter?
Every 4–8 weeks, depending on stocking. Rinse the mechanical media in old tank water and leave the biological media largely undisturbed.
